Today's training conditions in Key West

Key West heat index readings pass 100 F on ordinary summer afternoons, and that number decides more training outcomes here than any workout plan. This page reads live conditions from the National Weather Service station at Key West International, Open-Meteo, and the NOAA tide station at the harbor, then translates them into one decision: how hard to train outdoors today. The panel below updates through the day; the guidance under it explains what each number means for your session.
What each heat band means
The band in the panel comes from the current heat index, using the same cutoffs the National Weather Service uses for its caution categories.
- Green (heat index under 80 F), Train normally. Normal sessions. Drink to thirst, watch the UV line.
- Yellow (heat index 80 to 89 F), Hydrate on schedule, shade breaks. Planned fluids every 15 to 20 minutes, shade breaks between efforts.
- Orange (heat index 90 to 102 F), Shorten sessions, move hard efforts before 9am. Cut planned volume, push intensity to dawn, double the fluid schedule.
- Red (heat index 103 F and above), Indoor or dawn only, this is injury and illness territory. No midday outdoor training. Dawn or indoor sessions only.
UV 8+: reapply every 90 minutes on the water, more with spray. Falling pressure: stiff joints may complain today; plan a longer warm-up. When the National Weather Service posts an active alert for the Lower Keys, a red badge appears in the panel and links to the full alert text.

Why the Keys punish the unprepared
Summer here is a wet-bulb problem, not just a thermometer problem. Dew points sit in the 70s through the warm months (the station read a 75 F dew point during this page's last review), which means sweat stops evaporating efficiently and your core temperature climbs faster than the air temperature suggests. That is why the heat index, not the plain temperature, drives the band above, and why the National Athletic Trainers' Association builds its exertional heat illness guidance around adjusting work-to-rest ratios as conditions climb.
Winter flips the script. Cold fronts drop in with north winds that turn a flat morning row into a fight, and the season's best running weather arrives with crosswinds that change pacing math on the way back up the island. The third factor is glare. Midday sun off the water roughly doubles your UV exposure, because the surface reflects what the sky already delivers. Skin is the obvious casualty, but squinting fatigue and missed footing on a wet deck are the sports medicine version. Peak UV in Key West routinely reaches the extreme range in summer; the panel shows both the current value and today's peak so you can put hard efforts on the right side of it.
